NORBU and the Age of DharmaYana

1. DharmaYana - Personalized Dharma Outreach

2025 marks the dawn of NORBU's DharmaYana, symbolizing the "new generation of custom Buddhist outreach," or NewGen Buddhism. This initiative heralds a new era of personalized Dharma engagement, making the teachings of the Buddha accessible in a deeply individualized manner. DharmaYana, meaning "Dharma vehicle," enables authentic and verified teachings to flow seamlessly through digital neural networks, reaching Buddhists worldwide in their preferred language and at a personally relatable level.

2. NORBU Foundation

The DharmaYana initiative will drive the NORBU Foundation, a non-profit entity focused on:

  1. Establishing a systematic approach to managing operations, strategizing outreach, securing funding through donations, grants, and events, and optimizing resource allocation.

  2. Monitoring and reducing operational costs while enhancing the quality of NORBU's responses, developing it into a Buddhist AI Mothership for those wishing to create specific agents or applications.

  3. Creating an IT team of AI experts to ensure NORBU’s sustainability and foster an environment of open accessibility, including API development for educational and research purposes.

  4. Developing AI policies to assist Buddhist groups in effectively integrating AI into their practices, in alignment with Buddhist precepts.

2.1 Managing NORBU with a Systematic Approach

A structured organization with a non-profit objective will manage NORBU's operations, focusing on:

- Daily operations management

- Fundraising through various channels

- Resource allocation, including human resources, equipment, and AI maintenance

- Collaborative ventures leveraging internal AI expertise

2.2 NORBU - Buddhist AI Mothership

The Foundation will prioritize maintaining and improving NORBU’s performance by:

- Reducing user query costs

- Enhancing response quality

As NORBU anticipates handling up to 1 million daily queries, the Foundation will adopt long-term strategies to manage growth. In 2025, the AI team will explore open-source LLM platforms like DeepSeek to reduce costs.

To maintain and improve NORBU, the AI team will implement Massive Multitask Language Understanding (MMLU) benchmarking procedures to monitor and continually evaluate the quality of NORBU's Large Language Model (LLM). MMLU will provide ongoing valuable insights into NORBU's capabilities and areas for enhancement.

The MMLU benchmark will ensure NORBU maintains its principal role of consistently providing correct, accurate, and verified information. NORBU has developed a high degree of trust among users, and maintaining and enhancing that reputation is crucial.

In 2025, NORBU is expected to attain "Mothership status," with project APIs opened to any individuals or groups interested in developing specific agents or apps to access its rich resources.

2.3 AI IT Team

A dedicated AI team will focus on:

  • Continuous monitoring and R&D to enhance NORBU's performance

  • Implementing MMLU for special projects like benchmarking the Nalanda Diploma Course and CBETA.org content to improve dataset accuracy

  • Developing the "MettaYana" initiative to fuse the 4 Brahma Viharas with compassionate communication strategies, enhancing NORBU’s ability to handle sensitive discussions responsibly

2.4 Engagement with External Parties

The NORBU Foundation will collaborate with external entities to:

  • Help Buddhist centers integrate AI into their practices, improving community service

  • Share AI best practices through workshops to align technology use with Buddhist values

  • Leverage international connections to promote NORBU as a solution to societal issues like loneliness, cyberbullying, and dissatisfaction with material life, under the "KarunaYana" (Compassionate Vehicle) initiative

Conclusion

As NORBU embarks on this transformative journey, DharmaYana represents a significant leap in making the Buddha’s teachings more accessible and personalized. The initiatives outlined by the NORBU Foundation will ensure sustainable growth, technological excellence, and compassionate outreach, creating a global impact on Buddhist engagement and societal well-being. With continued support and innovation, NORBU is poised to lead the future of Buddhist AI, fostering a more connected and enlightened world.
